Plastering our way to perfection

Plastering and skimming- this is an application of a finishing plaster known in the trade as the two coat skim over walls and ceilings, The result is a smooth surface which is ready for painting and papering.

Rendering- this is the application of a sand cement mix to exposed brickwork which offers a good impermeable surface, internally outward facing walls are rendered. Internally facing walls are bonded. Rendering a wall consists of the application of two layers, firstly the scratch coat, which offers the second layer, a flat even surface and also a good key. the second coat is rubbed down to complete a quality finished service.

Tanking- Tanking is the application of a continuous water resistant barrier coating on the inside of an existing building, or applied to the external surfaces of a property to prevent water ingression.

Screeding- Is the leveling and smoothing of the top layer of a material that is poured, such as concrete, so the material is the same height as the forms, or guides, that surround it. While screeding concrete is a common example used in gardening and home improvement.

Pebble Dashing- Is a form of rendering using pea shingle or stone chippings in a sand and cement base. Roughcast is crushed stone mixed with cement and applied to walls. Arts and Crafts or Tudorbethan style homes used pebble dashing as a design feature. Pebble dashing obtained a poor image after it was over used in post war housing, particularly to cover up poor brickwork.

Ceiling Repair & Replacement- There are two varieties of ceilings, traditional lath-and-plaster and plasterboard. Laths are thin strips of timber that are nailed to the joists to form a board onto which plaster is applied. Lath-and-plaster ceilings often crack with age owing to their lack of flexibility. If you have a problem with your plastering we would recommend you bring in a professional for a smooth finish. Alternatively, you can use plasterboard. Sheets of plasterboard are nailed to ceiling joists, then a self-adhesive tape is used across the joints before the plaster is applied. Alternatively the ceiling can be 'dry-lined' and finished with jointing tape and jointing compound so it can be decorated without being plastered.
